My Grandfather was in the Navy and he had the pig and chicken tattoo on his feet and he said it was to prevent shark attacks if they went overboard. Is this true? |

You could take it as that. Everything I've been told says that when ships would sink the pigs and chickens in their crates would float. Therefore if you went overboard, you would float also.
I'm sure you could just take as a general charm against dying in the ocean. |

I've heard that this is to protect the seaman from drowning, because both of these barnyard animals cannot swim so they would get the seaman quickly to shore. Nice tattoo! |

crosses on the bottom of your feet are to ward off sharks. like they said the pig and chicken were sometimes the only survivors of shipwrecks-because their crates float.nice ink. |

I love your tattoos! Like someone else said, it's just amazing that people actually still know the old nautical 'mythology' about tattoo meanings. Let me know what you think of my anchor, 'kay? |

I'm actually getting a pig and a rooster on my feet next month with banners that say "never give in" (rooster) "never give up" (pig)... you know, like to prevent from "drowning" as well in a much more methaphoric fashion. I already have an anchor on my back keeping my head "grounded"... i like twisting the meanings a little by relating them, but keeping them as true as i can... i like the fact that you know the meaning for that, it's awesome... like they say below, not many know. |
