It will not only help to make the design clearer (stand out more,) but it will help to distort any small waving that may occur on the lines. Let's face it, no matter how good the artist, no human is perfect, and as such, there are always some small waves in the lines. I would suggest a gray scale shading though rather than actual color as that will serve to make it more authentic, and in cases where you do not know what color to use, it eliminates the need to pick one.
