wow, people of all colours sure are acting like children on this page! how is all of the nonsense about jesus' race and going to heaven relevant? about the tattoo, though... yes, it is possible for a symbol to have more than one meaning, in fact, most have many. the problem is, we can't use it intending to express only one message, and expect it to be read that way by others. the confederate flag was created as an expression of pride for southern american culture. african slaves were treated more harshly than draft animals in much of the american south. both of these things were true, a long time ago. what matters now is that racism continues to plague our society today, that however many years have passed the legacies of slavery have yet to be overcome, and, most importantly, that the confederate flag continues to be used as a powerful symbol of white supremacy by hate groups. having personally been harrassed by confederate-flag-waving white supremacists while participating in anti-oppression celebrations (and i am white, and this happened in canada, by the way), i find the symbol threatening and repugnant. southerners have many reasons to take pride in their culture and history, and every right to celebrate those aspects, but that pride has to be distanced from the intertwined histories of racism, as well as misogyny, anti-semitism, homophobia, etc., that the confederate flag has come to represent. at this point in history, it simply isn't possible to separate those contradictory meanings so that the flag can be used to express only the positive. if anything, using it only perpetuates negative stereotypes about the american south and obscures the many aspects of southern life and history that are worth celebrating. so go ahead, southerners, and take pride... just find a symbol that doesn't speak of ignorance, intollerance and oppression at the same time.

When I see the rebel flag I think of the South. The smell of jasmine, magnolias, honeysuckles and fresh cut grass on a hot summer night on the back porch watching lightning bugs. I see nothing on that flag that means anything about a black person. The only people who see that are the racist pigs who just can't let something go. Get over yourselves, it has nothing to do with blacks. It has to do with my SOUTHERN PRIDE and the fact that I LOVE THE SOUTH!
