In Japanese 卒 (reading:sotsu) is part of graduation. It also stands for soldier, private, and die. The ancient meaning being someone who has just graduated from basic, therefore in war they'd be the first in. (thus the reading of 'die')

兵卒 (heisotsu) is the actual word for soldier (as in private.)

the japanese kanji for soldier is 軍人(this is also the symbol for soldier in traditional chinese)。 Then there is the word for warrior　武士。 I too speak Japanese and my boyfriend has this tattoo on his wrist since he joined the army earlier this year.

Unfortunately, that character by itself doesn't mean "soldier" in Chinese or in Japanese. In Japanese, the closest meaning for that single character would be "die."
