Comment: Looks like the tattoo artist did a good job... outlining and shading looks perfect. My problem with it is the design of your tat. The second/third characters are in a different font than the other characters. And all the characters are composed too rigidly, as if they were straight from the printer. No natural energy in it, which is what Chinese calligraphy is all about... Not trying to ridicule you or get you to hate your tat, but you know, if I saw someone walking around with toilet paper stuck to their ass, I'd tell them... feel me?

Comment: Ok, so the characters are written correctly, if lacking a little style. That's not too bad. There are, however, big problems with this tattoo. First: meaning. The first character is a small value coin worth .01 yen. Why would you have that tattooed on you? Second problem: the second and third characters (the Japanese phonetic characters "bu" and "ku") are tattooed next to each other, rather than one above the other. They mean nothing in Japanese, even if combined with the fourth character below ("a") Third problem: The fifth character, meaning "pain," has the phonetic "i" tattooed after it; this is correct Japanese (it's read "ita-i") but looks stupid as a tattoo, and the "i" is tattooed way too close to the main character, and on a funny angle. Fourth problem: the characters are of different sizes, and the last character is too large. Overall, this tattoo may look cool if you can't read any of it, but to someone who can read Chinese characters and Japanese, it looks absolutely stupid.

From: Bob on November 13, 2006
Comment: Oh, and I forgot to mention: the character for pain means pain when it's by itself. When the phonetic "i" is placed after it, as in this tattoo, it means something more like "it hurts." Not the same thing at all. So, if it was in English, this tattoo would read something like "0.01cents asdfdg it hurts love." Cooooool.

Comment: yeah, i want to know what he thinks it means too. good job Bob. I'm not fluent in Japanese, but I know enough to understand your explanation.

From: Squoo on February 26, 2007
Comment: On the plus, it doesn't look like the scrawl of a three year old like so many Asian tattoos. On the down side, it's kind of gibberish, and in the Japanese equivalent of Times New Roman.

Comment: hahahahahah that sucks

From: jackfrost on February 28, 2007
Comment: Congratulation you just paid big bucks to have complete gibberish tattooed to your arm.

Comment: ... think before you ink

Comment: The first 3 blocks read in the reverse order "a"+"buku"+"zeni" means "money earned in improper way" in Japanese.

From: Bob on May 26, 2007
Comment: Well spotted, none. The tattoo still makes no sense, though.

From: KD on June 3, 2007
Comment: HAahhahahaha that's absolutely ridiculous. Why would you get a tattoo in a language you obviously have no knowledge of, and what's more, not even get it checked before getting it permanently inked on your body?? By the way, you are currently being discussed over at http://www.hanzismatter.com, the website for ridiculous misuses of hanzi and kanji. Congratulations!

From: wok on June 3, 2007
Comment: Sorry, man, but your tattoo is pretty bad. Upside down and some of it backwards. You need to check with an expert when you're picking a kanji tattoo, not the flash list on the wall. I can't really see it being really fixable.

From: Andrew on June 3, 2007
Comment: Following quote taken directly from http://www.hanzismatter.com "You will notice that it says (from top to bottom): 銭 ぶく あ 痛い 651; At first, it looks like just random gibberish, until you realize that it was actually all tattooed in inverted order, bottom to top rather than top to bottom! I think it was supposed to mean “Love Hurts” followed by “Easy Money." The silly client or tattooist must have just looked in a Japanese dictionary and found the words “love” (恋), “hurt” (痛い) and “easy money” (あぶく銭, also written 泡銭) and then strung them all together, grammar be damned, breaking the text in strange places and, to top it all off, tattooed the characters in the wrong order. All in all, it is a piece de resistance of ludicrous, terrible Japanese tattoo work, although the characters themselves are correct and written well." That was Alan's description from "Hanzismatter.com". "...piece de resistance of ludicrous.." That pretty much explains it quite well.

Comment: haha... no offense but i have to say I speak both chinese and japanese...and i can't help but think "silly white person" Im not trying to beracist...but if you had an ethnic friend they'd tell you what a bad idea that would be...and if you had an asian friend...he's tell you.."holy crap stop!" and it's not chinese...it's japanese... you got totally screwed..and it's huge.. stay in Virgina^_~ By the way...having foreign wording on you doesn't make you more cultured..haha. and its huge too...i hope Virginia is cold..cause your gonna want those long sleeve shirts.. haha.. you made my day^_^

Comment: Update: this was actually taken from some bad "kanji" flash. Check Hanzi Smatter for the video of a girl who thought she was getting her boyfriend's name tattooed on her in Chinese, but ended up with something that might be part of the name of a Chinese supermarket instead. At the very end of the video is a sheet of flash with these exact characters on it.
