Tattoo Design Details:
I got this tattoo about one year ago now. I researched for 3 years before hand, so please don't ask if I know what it means. I also know there is a flaw in the second character. I'm trying to think of a way to unify them using other japanese imagery though (koi, cherry blossom, luck cats, lotus, noh mask, geisha, etc) into a long back piece.

Comment: I won't ask you if you know what it means, I'll simply ask you what it means.

From: k4tj3 on January 17, 2006
Comment: I do know what it means and I know that it has errors that I'll be having fixed...probably when I add on to it at this point. I also am betting that its not in "proper" kanji (i.e. character order), but I didn't want it to either.

Comment: And, Ghostrider, because I submitted before I realized I read what you wrote incorrectly. 1st - Slave 2nd - Should be "Princess" but has a missing stroke 3rd & 4th - "Kitten" All of them have minor little things that need to be fixed in the caligraphy, but nothing that cant easily be changed. (extra flare at one end of the stroke and that sort of thing)

Comment: i know what you mean about getting it fixed. my 2nd character is missing a "tail" on the right side of the horizontal brush stroke... it was on the stencil i drew but i guess he went over it. i'll get it fixed later when i add more to it anyways... but as for yours, i was trying to figure out the 3rd one... it may just be because of where it is, that its hard to see in the crook of your back.... but it doesnt look right. then when i read its suppose to be "kitten," which is "ko neko." then i realized that its the same as my 2nd one. luckily since the lines are pretty narrow, it would be easier to fix it, like you said.... but you should ask an actual japanese calligraphist to help. otherwise i think a nice floral theme would be beautiful to tie them all together, with vines, leaves, flowers.

Comment: where'd you get it done?

From: k4tj3 on August 29, 2006
Comment: I actually got it done at a Tattoo convention in Green Bay. I went with a friend whos tattoo artist is the host/creator of the convention, and we were given a great tip to go to this guy. Black Art Ink from England, though I'd have to double check the business card again, as its been almost two years now and he didn't come back last year. :)

Comment: Unfortunately, you didn't do your research very thoroughly. The first kanji is read "yatsu," and by itself most commonly means "guy, fellow, manservant." It's very poorly written. The second character does mean princess, and as you know is missing a stroke. It's also very poorly written. The third and fourth characters, read together, mean "kitten." The problem is that, given that the first two characters are not intended to be read together, it's more intuititve to read the last two characters separately as well. So your back really reads "guy, princess, child, cat." It's going to take a skilled calligrapher and a skilled tattooer to fix the problems with the ways the kanji are written, particularly the fourth one.

From: k4tj3 on November 13, 2006
Comment: Bob, thank you for your comment. However, I am framiliar with everything that you wrote. On the other hand, your comments about what is most common, isn't necessarily correct for the first one reading "guy". It is the most common (and possibly overused) symbol in the BDSM community meaning "slave", which are the people I'm more concerned about reading it, than the average joe. Also, if I'm not mistaken (which I may well be), the first 1/2 of that symbol makes it a feminine (you see the same symbol in the first half of the princess kanji as well, which is why it is princess, not prince). And as far as them being all read separately, it was intended to be that way. Or at least intended to be spaced thus and to be independant words that were related, but not necessarily a sentance.

Comment: The "onna" (woman) radical does not always make a character femininine. There are many examples of kanji that contain that radical that are not exclusively feminine or even gendered at all.
