Neck Piercings

Neck Piercings are some of the most visually interesting forms of body modification ever conceived. But with their cool and extreme look also comes responsibility and an extensive aftercare program to maintain a piercing that will look good and be healthy for a long, long time.

Neck Piercings generally come in two forms. One is the “Madison” piercings which are located in the loose tissue that sits between the collarbone. Named after a porn star who was the first recorded person to get this piercing, Madison neck piercings are best done with 1.6mm gauge jewelry and done in an area where there is plenty of tissue. Curved jewelry, specifically made for Madison piercings, is most ideal because of its ability to greatly reduce the chance of migration and infection.

Another form of neck piercing is a nape piercing. The nape refers to the back of the neck and is often used with surface bar jeweler, but can also be done with nylon to create a distinctive-looking piercing. Though many people fear nerve damage from nape neck piercings there is no conclusive medical evidence that piercings in this region of the body have any greater risk of this any other part of the body.

Because neck piercings, both the Madison and the nape variations, are surface piercings they require special care to heal properly. This means daily cleaning and in many cases touchups from your piercing artist. But even with rigorous care they can still prove problematic. Neck piercings can often catch on clothing and be stressed by the simple movement of the neck. This can cause the body to reject the piercing and lead to migration or infection.

The best thing to with neck piercings is relax, keep it clean, and realize you might have some discomfort during the 2 months your piercing is healing. For many people the minor inconvenience of the healing process is outweighed by the cool and unique look they achieve through their neck piercings. No pain, no gain.
