Surface Piercings

Surface piercings are forms of body piercing that are administered through the surface flap of the skin rather than entirely through areas of skin tissue. This makes them some of the more distinctive unique forms of body modification, but also one of the more sensitive piercings that require diligent care and adherence to safety precautions.

Surface piercings can be virtually anywhere on the body where skin is not concave or convex and the metal rests only on the surface layer of the skin. Metal chosen  should be specifically made for surface piercings, as this will reduce the risk of migration and infection—two factors which are present in any piercing but especially with these unique forms of body art.

Popular surface piercing forms include corset piercings, eyebrow piercings, neck piercings, and hand web piercing. Neck and eyebrow surface piercings continue to be the most popular with their highly-visible look, but corset piercings have become a very trendy temporary piercing alternative for special events like proms or parties. Though these surface piercings can look amazing it is important to realize these areas were not designed for easy piercing care. It is absolutely vital to keep the area continually clean and watch out for irritation that can be caused by catching the jewelry on clothing or other objects.

Surface piercings generally take about 2 months to heal and can require follow-up visitations to your piercing artist. Some piercing artists refuse to perform surface piercings because of their somewhat low success rate. With proper hygiene and diligent after-care this shouldn’t be an issue. It is however important to choose a piercing artist who has experience with surface piercings and keeps a clean shop. These piercings can present a few challenges along the way, yet most people find the reward well worth it. With a little patience on your part, you should be very happy with your surface piercing experience.
