Female piercing in one form or another has been practiced by humans for over 10,000 years. Ancient Intuit tribes in Canada routinely used female piercings to convey wealth and social status of their family, while the women of Borneo would use piercings of the tongue and the labia to attract a suitable husband. Today female body piercing art continues to offer women a chance to express themselves and establish their own identity. But with any introduction of a foreign element into the body—expressing oneself with a body piercing must be done in a safe and smart manner. Here we help answer some common female piercing questions. Female Piercing Question #1: I’m thinking of getting my ears pierced. What sort of metal should I use to avoid infection? And how long before I can take them out? Ear piercings are not as prone to infection as other forms of piercings, but metals such as surgical steel, often used in mall store piercings, do provoke an allergic reaction in some people. By far the best choice is gold earrings which are kinder to the human body. Make sure to rotate the earrings twice a day to avoid scabbing. After a piercing you should leave your earrings in for at least 3-4 weeks and wear them as much as possible for the next year to help the healing process. Ear piercing holes tend to close up rather quickly directly after the procedure, as opposed to other areas of the body which can take longer to heal and often never close up. Female Piercing Question #2: My boyfriend wants me to get a clit piercing. Is it safe? Clitoral piercings are a rather new procedure in the pantheon of female piercings and are generally used to heighten sensitivity during sexual intercourse. Clit piercings are anatomically-dependent, and require the clitoris to be large enough to support a piercing. Piercings done with too small a clitoris can result in nerve damage and blood loss. Many women confuse clitoral piercings with labia piercings. Labia piercings have been done for thousands of years and have a much lower rate of infection and migration. If you are thinking of getting any kind of genital female piercing, it goes without saying, that you should seek out a very competent and qualified professional. The slightest mistake done in this area of the body can lead to profound complications. |
