Butterfly Tattoos
The butterfly tattoo is by far the most used artistic subject matter of all insects, especially in the
tattoo industry. Butterflies became a fad years ago by being the theme of many pieces of jewelry, t-shirts, scarves, paintings, and tattoos. Artists have a real freedom of creativity when they are creating butterfly tattoos because the designs are not rigid. They can be changed in color, size, shape, and other details without looking distorted.
The butterfly has many different meanings. In our society, its symbol has been commonly known as freedom, change, and growth. The butterfly lives in several different stages. Beginning as an egg and entering the world as a caterpillar, where it lives a constrained life through its time spent in the cocoon. This is where the mysterious transition into butterfly takes place. It appears from the cocoon with symmetrical, colorful wings and flutters away as this beautiful, new creature. The change from the caterpillar into a butterfly is certainly a huge step in the right direction with its newfound ability to suddenly fly freely, as opposed to creep along as a caterpillar.
Butterflies can also take on the meaning of fragility. Because the butterfly can be destroyed by as little force as rain and wind, it is one of the most fragile creatures around. Knowing that they are a frail creature, people should treat them gently. In Japan, women are sometimes called butterflies to remind men of women’s delicate nature.
Because of their feminine nature, butterfly tattoos are of course, most commonly found on the bodies of women. The popular places to get a butterfly tattoo are on the lower back, on the shoulder, and on the ankle.
