Sports Tattoos

Sports tattoos come in many different forms and styles. Sports tattoos can either be representations of a person’s favorite team or depictions of the tattoos a certain sports athlete might wear. Either way they represent an interesting medium where counterculture meets mainstream entertainment head-on.

The term fan comes from the word fanatic—an adequate description for mad-crazed fans that get sports tattoos. Nothing shows commitment to a sports franchise or university team like a Boston Red Sox tattoo, a Green Bay Packer tattoo, or a Notre Dame tattoo emblazoned on one’s forearm. And of all the professional American sports leagues, it is football that inspires the most sports tattoos, with the Raiders being an extremely popular choice amongst die-hard and casual fans alike. Perhaps this shouldn’t be a surprise considering the violent and renegade nature of the sport, but even soccer with its legion of fans around the world inspires sports tattoos that continue to grow in popularity.

But sports tattoos don’t just refer to the logo of a certain team or emblem. For many the constant turnover of professional sports personnel makes it difficult for fans to support one specific team---so instead they follow certain players. Michael “Air” Jordan sports tattoos, with that distinctive “Nike Air Jordan” logo, are very popular choices as sports tattoos go. As well, tats of the face of Tiger Woods have started to show up more and more as a way to honor this legendary golfer.

Sports tattoos can also relate to the tats that individual athletes wear themselves. Pro Basketball players like Allen Iverson, Dennis Rodman, and Rasheed Wallace are famous for their interesting mix of Neo-Tribal and old school tattoos, and many fans get the same tat design. Though not as visually accessible as basketball, many football players have intricate tat designs that people emulate in their sports tattoos.

Getting your own sports tattoo is a matter of choosing the exact image and style you want. Any sports logo can be adjusted to many different tat styles, and any sports tattoo a certain player has can, of course, be adjusted to your own specific tastes. All that is important is to pick a sports tattoo design that you are still going to like and appreciate many years down the road.
