Mermaid Tattoos

Mermaids represent the sea, as well as feminine power and our unconscious needs and desires.  Because of their beautiful appearance as half-woman, half-fish and their strong correlation to feminism, mermaid tattoos are gaining popularity.

Mermaids are most commonly found in children’s books, fantasy artwork, and folk literature.  Mermaid tattoos are also on the rise, with a growing number of females getting tattoos.  Mythical, fictitious, and supernatural subjects are the focus of more stories, movies, and body art as of recently.  Many believe this is due to our imaginations taking over.

The story of the mermaid has been around forever.  Some believe she began as the sea goddess, Aphrodite, while others believe she was an offspring of paganism, when the sea was worshipped along with its creatures. Sailors helped to keep the faith in mermaids alive by claiming to see them in the waters they traveled.

However her myth was born, the myth of the mermaid has never died.  Today, she has taken on the role of a cute, sexy, and docile sea creature.  The comb she always holds is said to represent a women’s creative strengths, while the mirror she holds can represent where our souls live: in the past, the future, and within our own spiritual nature.

Mermaid tattoos are covering the arms, legs, backs, and bodies of women everywhere.  And their imagery of feminine power, seduction, mystery, expression, creativity, and spirituality has gained them popularity at no surprise to anyone.
