Rose tattoos are so famous that not only are they one of the most popular tattoos to get, but they also have supplied the name for rock bands, feminist websites, and one very depressing Tennessee Williams play. They are universally trendy tats for men and women both to modify the look of their body and express certain ideas of beauty.

Rose tattoos have been an American tattoo staple for many years. Navy Sailors and other world travelers would often get them to honor a wife or a girlfriend that they had left back home, and while tattoos for much of the first part of the 20th century were seen as freakish and deviant, rose tattoos were considered to be the one image suitable for a woman to tattoo her body with.

Rose tats come in a huge variety of shapes and styles. They can be pictured singly or in a group, with stems or without, and with or without vines. Much of their imagery depends on what the person wearing it chooses to express—and where on the body they decide to place the tattoo.

Though rose tattoos have a certain feminine connotation nowadays, the rose as it originated in ancient Persia, was always seen as a masculine flower. Over the years the image of the rose tattoo has come to personify feminine beauty and love, and the popularity of female lower back variations and female genital designs proves this to be the case.

Rose tattoos can also differ in both their look and symbolism based on their color. A red rose tattoo might symbolize love, while a white rose design would indicate a sense of innocence or virginal grace. Black rose tattoos, on the other hand, connote an embracing of death and is a very popular Goth tattoo.

With all these options, it’s important to talk to your tattoo artist to go over a specific design that is right for you. Your tat artist can offer suggestions and help you with choices regarding the style and body location of your design.
