Perhaps the only question more important than what your tattoo looks like…is where on your body is your tat. Popular body modification options like breast tattoos, lower back tattoos, and armband tattoos prove that the vibe and emotion of a tattoo can be drastically affected by its given location on the body.

Arm tattoos might be the most popular body-specific tats around. Seen as a great flexible space, with which to do both simple tat designs or complex images that stretch around the entire arm, arm tattoos also have the distinction as a great place for a 1st-timer tattoo. (Arm tattoos are not nearly as painful as other areas of the body because of the amount of muscle.)

Within this group armband tattoos are extremely trendy---especially the tribal armband tattoos and celtic armband tattoos, with their aggressive and intricate designs that connote strength and intensity. Although wrist sleeves are a popular niche choice for those more experienced tat customers who want a body tattoo with a little extra. Back tattoos and notably lower back tattoos are another popular body-specific form of body art. Back tattoos have been used for thousands of years to create rich tapestries of art on the back of the wearer due to its large surface area and resemblance to a flat canvas. But lower back tattoos are as popular, if not more so, especially with women who like the sensual nature of these tattoos that can be both hidden and revealed at the same time.

Foot tattoos are common in areas like the thigh and ankle but not nearly so on the actual foot itself. This area of the body is rather sensitive and prone to infection making a foot tattoo something for experienced tat customers. Ankle tattoos, on the other hand, are popular for small recognizeable designs like butterflies and dolphins and their ability to be hidden, if needed, for work purposes.

Perhaps the most controversial form of body-specific tats are gential tattoos. These can be for both men and women and usually involve an image that is highly-emotional or sensual in nature. But it’s a misnomer to believe that genital tattoos always have a sexual component. For many, genital tattoos are a way to reclaim one’s independence from sexual mores and stereotypes, and is often seen as a badge of honor for abuse survivors.

But wherever on your body you decide to get a tattoo just make sure to consult with your tattoo artist prior to inking. They can give you a realistic expectation of your recovery time and tips for keeping your tattoo healthy and looking great for the rest of your life.
